Sensory Wheels Play Pack

Sensory Wheels Play Pack

Spin. Explore. Discover.

Two wheels. Two ways to discover how the world moves.

The Sensory Wheels Play Pack takes something the real world does — turning natural forces into movement — and makes it small enough for children to explore and operate themselves.

With the Dry Discovery Wheel and Wet & Wild Wheel, children can investigate gravity, flowing water and wind through hands-on play. Pour, fill, spin, watch and try again as they discover that different forces can create movement in different ways.

Dry Discovery Wheel

Fill the transparent compartments with grains, sand, lentils, beads or other loose materials and watch gravity take over. As children add and release materials, they can see them move through the wheel, creating continuous spinning motion.

Children can experiment with different materials and amounts, watching how the movement changes and discovering that not everything flows in quite the same way.

Wet & Wild Wheel

The open paddle design gives children a hands-on way to explore how flowing water creates movement. Pour water across the paddles and watch the wheel spin.

Take it outdoors on a breezy day and let the wind take over. Children can discover that a completely different natural force can create the same result — movement.

More Ways to Explore

The wheels are designed to work beautifully on their own, but they can also become part of bigger play systems.

Add the Dry Discovery Wheel to the Wooden Funnel & Chute to continue the movement of loose materials, or add the Wet & Wild Wheel to the Wooden Water Ways to extend water play.

Children can explore what happens when movement flows from one part of a system into another — giving them even more to pour, spin, watch and work out.

Children can make predictions, change what they add, watch what happens and try again. They begin to notice that the material, amount and force can all change the way something moves.

Beautifully crafted from natural timber, the Sensory Wheels give children a simple, physical way to see, touch and work out how forces create movement in the real world.

Learning Opportunities

How Forces Create Movement
Children pour, fill and spin as they discover how gravity, flowing water and wind can make things move.

Feel, See & Explore
Children use grains, sand, water and loose materials to explore how different materials behave as they move.

Watch, Predict & Test
Children make predictions, watch what happens and try different materials, amounts and forces to see how movement changes.

Work It Out
Children experiment with what they add, how much they use and how they create movement to discover what works.

Compare & Discover
Children explore how different forces can create movement and begin to notice that the same result can happen in different ways.

Build a Bigger System
Children can connect the wheels with other Explore Nook resources and explore what happens when materials or water move from one part of a system to another.
